Dillon and Fannie Mayo of Winston County, Mississippi represent somewhat of a mystery to me. They are the progenitors of a rather large family of descendants, many of whom settled in southwestern Winston County in the community around Shiloh Baptist Church. Yet, while much information has been compiled on their descendants, information on Dillon and Fannie appears to be scarce. Personally, I have conflicting information as to their places of birth and even their names.
Dillon Mayo is shown in my notes by the following names: Dillon, Dillard, and Stephen Delar Mayo. I have several choices for birth place. On the 1880 census of Winston County, Mississippi, Dillon and Fannie's son Charlie said his father was born in Virginia. On the 1900 Winston census, daughter Sue Whitten said her father was born in Tennessee. And in a 1999 interview, great-great-granddaughter Kay Black, who is also researching the family, said Dillon was born in North Carolina. I have no information as to date of birth. However, since his wife Fannie was born about 1825, I would assume he would be would have been born within a decade or so of her. Likewise, I have no information as to his date of death, but Fannie is listed as head of the house on the 1870 Winston census. Another Mayo researcher, Mary Ann Carter, has his place of death listed as Kemper County, Mississippi but does not indicate where he was buried.
Fannie Mayo is shown in my notes by the following names: Fanny, Mary Fannie, Mattie Mazell, and Mary Z. She is listed as Fanny on the 1870 census and as Mary Z. on the 1880 census, both in Winston County. Her age in 1870 was given as 45 (born in 1825) and in 1880 as 63 (born in 1827). I have several choices for birth place for Fanny also. On the 1870 Winston, she is listed as born in Mississippi, and on the 1880 Winston she is listed as born in South Carolina. In 1900, her daughter Sue Whitten said her mother was born in Alabama. I have no information as to her death date or place of burial.
Dillon and Fannie were probably married sometime between 1840 - 1850. No record has been found (as far as I know), and the birth dates of their oldest children contain conflicting information also. If someone could provide some clues as to where to locate this family on the 1860 census, we might could determine the birth order of the oldest few children.
Stephen Delar/Dillon/Dillard Mayo
Born: probably circa 1810-1820 in North Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia
Married: probably circa 1840-1845
Died: before 1870, possibly in Kemper County, Mississippi
Mattie Mazell / Mary Fannie Mayo (maiden name unknown)
Born: 1825 in South Carolina, Alabama, or Mississippi
Died: after 1880, probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Buried: Unknown but probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Note: These children are not necessarily in birth order.
Thomas' birthdate is in question. Kay Black told me July 1840, but he is listed as age 30 on 1880 census for Winston County, Mississippi and thus would be born in 1850. He is not on the 1870 Winston with his mother, but he did not marry until 1876. Where is he in 1870 and how old was he?
Sue's birthdate is also in question. On the 1870 census for Winston County, Mississippi, Sue is listed in the household with her mother Fanny, and her age is given as 24, making her born in 1846. On the 1900 census for Winston County, Sue is listed with her husband John Whitten at age 43 with a birthdate of September 1856. The 1910 Winston gives her age as 55 (thus born in 1855), but the 1920 Winston gives her age as only 58 (thus born in 1862.) I have birth dates ranging almost twenty years! It is as if she never aged between censuses. She only aged 19 years from 1870 - 1900, and only 5 from 1900 - 1910!
I have no other information on Elizabeth. Not present on 1870 census for Winston County, Mississippi with her mother.
Sarah Jane is buried beside Richard at Center Ridge with only a plain concrete marker, no dates. Richard served in Co. I, 4oth MS Infantry, CSA. Great-granddaughter Inez Blaine said he served at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Birthdate of 1849 is per 1870 census for Winston County, Mississippi (listed as age 21). I have no other information on Fanny.
John's birthdate was listed as November 1850 on the 1900 census for Winston County, Mississippi. This date is also listed on tombstone. However, he as listed as age 12 on the 1870 Winston census (thus born in 1858). This discrepancy is a problem because if John was born in November 1850, then his brother Thomas J. probably was NOT born in July 1850! So was Thomas born in 1840 or was John born in 1858?
Charles' birthdate is listed as October 1850 on the 1900 census for Winston County, Mississippi. He also gave his age as 49. However, in 1870, his age was listed as 17 (born in 1853) on the Winston census, and 1853 is on his tombstone. The 1910 Winston census listed his age as 55 (born in 1855).
Dewitt's birthdate of 1856 is per the 1870 census of Winston County, Mississippi (age 14). Kay Black said he died young, and I cannot find him anywhere else.
William's birthdate of March 1851 is on his tombstone. He was listed as age 52 (born in 1858) on the 1910 census for Winston County, Mississippi. However, on the 1870 Winston census he is listed as age 10 (born in 1860), and he gave his birthdate as March 1860 on the 1900 Winston census.
