The Family of George Rowland
and Nancy Ann Spencer Terry

INTRODUCTION

This page created May 6, 2007.

Nancy Ann Spencer, daughter of Wiley G. and Nancy Spencer, married James Terry in Alabama around 1848. Family history shared with me by Ricky Shingler and Lester Barrentine tells me that James and Nancy had a daughter named Nancy Juanita or "Nina". They may have also had a daughter named Mary, as shown on the 1850 census of Winston County, Mississippi, but either she died young or is the same daughter as Nancy Juanita.

It appears that James Terry died between 1850-1853. I did not capture in my records exactly when the 1853 state census was taken in Winston County, Mississippi, but Ann Terry's household must have been enumerated early in the year because marriage records of Winston County, Mississippi show that Nancy Ann Terry remarried to George Y. Rowland in April of that year, 1853. Ricky Shingler, a descendant of Nancy Ann and George Rowland, told me that family tradition confirmed that Nancy Ann was widowed before she married George Rowland. However, family files shared with me in 2002 by Ricky and his cousin Lester Barrentine show a marriage year of 1854 for George and Nancy Ann.

In fact, if it were not for Ricky and Lester, my story of Nancy Ann Terry would have ended there. In 2002, Ricky Shingler contacted me based on a query I had posted about the J. A. and C.E. Whitten family listed on the 1900 Warren County, Mississippi census. I was curious as to whether the family listed on that census might be John A. Whitten, son of Austin and Hannah Whitten of Winston County. Ricky explained that he was a descendant of that census family and confirmed for me that the name of the head of the household was John A. Whitten. From that first e-mail, I learned that, not only was Ricky a descendant of Austin and Hannah Whitten through son John A. Whitten, but that he was also a descendant of Nancy Ann Spencer Terry. He explained that John A. Whitten's wife was Cora Ellen Rowland, daughter of George Y. Rowland and his second wife Nancy Ann Terry, both of whom were from Winston County, Mississippi. Wow! I now had leads on the families of both Nancy Ann Spencer Terry and her sister Hannah Spencer Whitten! Over the next year, Ricky Shingler and Lester Barrentine graciously shared with me the story of their family. Much of their information had been given to them by their aunt Betty Stout, and I am grateful for their sharing it with me. Here is a high summary of the Spencer-Terry-Rowland family of Warren County, Mississippi.

Nancy Ann Terry and George Y. Rowland were married in Winston County, Mississippi in either 1853 or 1854 (sources are conflicting). Nancy Ann was not George's first wife as he too was widowed, losing his first wife Rebecca Stark around 1853. After they were married, George and Nancy Ann combined their respective families Brady-style (her one daughter and his eight children) and moved their large blended family from Winston County to Warren County, Mississippi and settled in the Oak Ridge area near Vicksburg. They went on to have six more children together and reared them all in Warren County. Many of their children reared their families in Warren County also. Listed below are the six children of George Rowland and Nancy Spencer Terry.

As stated above, the information on the Rowland family has been courteously provided to me by fellow researchers Ricky Shingler and Lester Barrentine, both of whom are descended from George and Nancy Rowland. I have not verified their information except for the census information listed in the Family History section below.

  7. Cora's husband John A. Whitten was the son of Austin Whitten and Hannah Spencer. Hannah Spencer Whitten was the sister to Cora's mother, Nancy Ann Spencer Terry Rowland. John was living in Winston County during the 1880 census, and he and Cora were married in 1883 in Warren County. How did they meet? Where did they meet? Did John move to Warren County before or after he met and married Cora?

John and Cora had six children: Annie H. Whitten (1885, married Jasper McBroom), John A. Whitten, Jr (1888), Spencer Buren Whitten (1890, married Susie Watkins), William E. Whitten (February 1896), Mary Lee Whitten (April 1896, married John Boone), and R.F.F. Whitten (1898). I wonder if William and Mary Lee were really both born in 1896. Perhaps one of them was born in 1897? Both Ricky Shingler and Lester Barrentine are descendants of Spencer Buren Whitten and Susie Ann Watkins through their daughter Alice Pearl Whitten and husband Joe Lenard Barrentine.
