Littleton Whitten was born in 1802 in Union District, South Carolina, the second son of Philip and Delilah Whitten. He moved with his parents and siblings about 1821 to Walton County, Georgia where he became a lieutenant in the Walton County Militia from 1822-1823. He married Catherine Head in May 1830, and they had their first child in February 1832. Apparently Catherine became pregnant immediately after this baby was born because her next children, a set of twins, were born prematurely in August that same year. In fact, Littleton and Catherine's first child, Frances, died only a few days before the twins were born. Sadly, the twins died at birth. Again Catherine conceived shortly thereafter, only to lose a second set of twins born prematurely in June 1833, just ten months later. Catherine did not recover from this tragedy, dying about two weeks later.
Catherine was the daughter of Marshall Head. W.C. Whitten, in his book Whitten and Allied Families, provides this information: "In Morgan Co., Ga. Deed Book I, p. 373, Littleton Whitten sold to Marshall Head for $200, 'property which I have claim to by way of intermarriage to Cat'y Weaver Head,' 11 Nov. 1832, recorded 30 may 1833. This appears to be Littleton Whitten's first wife. Since the 'property' was not defined, the Head family seemed to be buying Littleton out of any claims to family property which arose because of death of her ancestors."
After Catherine's death in June 1833, Littleton quickly remarried in December to Cornelia Ruark.
