James L. White and Martha McArthur

INTRODUCTION

This page created January 29, 2011.

James Leroy White
Born:  1831 in Alabama
Married:  December 04, 1851 in Noxubee County, Mississippi
Died:  February 25, 1888 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Buried:  Murphy Creek Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi
Father:  James White (son of Sherwood White)
Mother:  M. (cemetery shows M. White, wife of James)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Martha McArthur or McCarthy
Born:  1832 in Alabama
Died:  After 1893 but unknown as to where (based on her 1893 application for widow's pension in Winston County)
Buried: Unknown
Father:  Unknown, but A. McArthur in 1860 Winston County is a possible lead (right age and born in Scotland)
Mother:  Unknown, but A. McArthur's wife in 1860 Winston County is named Mary
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. John H. White
    Born: 1855 in Mississippi
Married:  November 18, 1880 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Spouse:  Mary Kitty Avery - although Sallie Chappell told me that Mary's name was really Kitty Katie Katherine Mary Elizabeth Ann
Died:  Unknown but probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Buried:  Sardis Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi

I have been told that John H. White lived in the Perkinsville community.

  2. James Alonzo "Lon" White - usually listed a J.A. White
Born:  November 23, 1857 in Mississippi, possibly in Noxubee County
Married:  October 17, 1883 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Spouse:  Callie Marguerite Wofford - also listed as Margaret Caroline Wofford
Died:  December 28, 1894 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
Buried:  Murphy Creek Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi
  3. Isaac K. White
Born: Bet. January - July 1860 in Mississippi
    Married:  Unknown
    Died:  Unknown
    Buried:  Unknown

I know that Isaac K. White was listed on the 1860 census of Noxubee County as I.K. in the home Leroy and Martha White, but no age was given. He was listed as Isaac, age 10, on the 1870 Winston County census living with James and Martha White. Lastly, he was listed as Isaac K., age 20, on the 1880 Winston County census with James L. and Martha White. The 1880 census was taken in July, while the 18860 and 1870 censuses had been taken in September. For this reason, I believe Isaac was born in 1860, sometime before July. I also remember seeing a land deed between I.K. White and Martha White in Winston County sometime in the late 1890's or early 1900's. I remember seeing the deed, but I don't remember when it was given. The date on that deed would help narrow down the date of death for Martha.

  4. Rebecca White
Born: Bet. July - September 1864 in Mississippi
Married:  January 15, 1891 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
    Spouse:  A. B. Hill
Died:  Unknown but probably in Oklahoma
Buried:  Unknown but probably in Oklahoma

Rebecca was listed on the 1870 Winston County census at age 6 in the home of James and Martha White. She was listed on the 1880 Winston Census at age 15 in the home of James L and Martha White. Since the 1870 census was taken in September and her age would correlate to a birthdate of 1864, while the 1880 census was taken in July and her age then would correlate to a birthdate of 1865, I have inferred that her birthday must have fallen between July 22 (date of the 1880 census) and September 15 (date of the 1870 census). The only other thing I know about her is that my grandfather Henry White and another relative, Sallie Chappell (granddaughter? of John H. White) told me that Aunt Becky Hill lived in Oklahoma. Did she live near sister Sarah Williams in Sarah, Oklahoma?

  5. Sarah White
Born: Bet. July - September 1866 in Mississippi
    Married:  Unknown
Spouse:  Williams - I was told she married a Williams, but I don't know his name.
Died:  Unknown but probably in Oklahoma
Buried:  Unknown but probably in Oklahoma

I have used a similar logic to deduce Sallie's birth month as I did for Rebecca. Sarah was listed as age 4 on the 1870 census in September and as 13 on the 1880 census in July. My grandfather and Sallie Chappell told me Aunt Sallie Williams lived in Sarah, Oklahoma and that Neal White (son of Sallie's brother Lon) was living with her when he died. Neal was buried in Doxey-Sayre Cemetery in Sarah. Was Sarah perhaps buried there too?

  6. Mary White
Born: May 1870, probably in Winston County, Mississippi
Married:  March 10, 1891 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi
    Spouse:  Joseph J. Cutts
    Died:  Unknown
    Buried:  Unknown

Mary was listed as 3 months old on the 1870 Winston County census in September; thus the assumption that she was born in May 1870. She was listed as 10 in July on the 1880 Winston census. Sallie Chappell told me Mary had family in Bramwood, Texas.

1850 Winston County, MS census:

[MKJ note: It appears that James and Finetta were twice enumerated. Did they move within 3 days or did the census taker come by the same house twice? It also appears that this White family arrived in Mississippi from Alabama between 1830-1832.]
